Nordic data center firm atNorth is planning a campus in Norway.

The company this week announced its expansion into Norway with the acquisition of land for a data center development site in Haugaland.

The 36-hectare plot within the 1,235-acre Haugaland Business Park will host NOR01. Initial phases will deliver 120MW, with a ramp-up to 350MW. Site renders suggest four buildings are planned.

Haugaland Næringspark, owner of the park, said atNorth aims to invest around NOK 11 billion ($1.1bn) in the first phase.

Power availability for the site is projected for 2028. This will be supported by the construction of two substations, one developed by Statnett, Norway’s transmission system operator, and one by Fagne, the regional grid provider.

“Expanding to Norway has been a long-term strategic priority for us, and we’re proud to officially mark our presence across all the Nordic countries with the announcement of NOR01,” said Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth. “Haugaland Business Park is a strong industrial region that offers the ideal combination of renewable energy, excellent connectivity, and a naturally cool climate, making it a highly attractive location for future-focused, AI workloads. We look forward to collaborating with the local community to deliver world-class digital infrastructure in a responsible way.”

The site will primarily use cooling provided by closed-loop chilled water systems in combination with modern mechanical cooling systems, modular compressors with free cooling capabilities. NOR01 will reportedly be able to support up to 1MW rack densities.

AtNorth was formed as Advania Data Centers in 2012 from three components: Skyrr, a public sector IT specialist in Iceland; Kerfi, a Swedish outfit with roots in a Nokia spin-off called Datapoint, and Hands from Norway. The company was recently acquired by Equinix and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP) in a $4.2 billion deal.

It currently operates seven data centers across Sweden, Iceland, and Finland, with more in development in Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

The business park is located at Gismarvik in Tysvær municipality in Rogaland, some 530km (329 miles) southwest of Oslo. The park is owned by the municipalities of Karmøy, Haugesund, Tysvær, Vindafjord, and Bokn, along with the state-owned industrial growth company Siva.

AtNorth said it is actively exploring heat reuse opportunities in partnership with local stakeholders.

Haugaland Næringspark has been working with Statkraft since 2019 to attract data centers to the park.

“This is a major milestone for us. After almost 20 years of maturing and developing areas and infrastructure, we are now seeing the first major industrial establishments being realized in the park,” said Tiril Fjeld, general manager of Haugaland Næringspark. “It is natural that data centers are added to larger industrial parks like ours. Here we have access to power, space, and infrastructure, which are important prerequisites for being able to utilize the excess heat from the data center for further value creation locally.”

Green Mountain has also previously bought land in Haugaland for data center development, though it’s unclear if work has begun to develop the site.

“We are very pleased to welcome atNorth to Haugaland,” said Monika Lindanger, Mayor of Tysvær Municipality. “This project will not only bring in new investment and innovation to the region but will also support our local community through training and employment opportunities, our economy via sustainable industry development, and our circular economy with beneficial heat reuse partnerships. We’re proud to be part of this next chapter in the Nordic data center evolution.”
