Amazon has announced its third water replenishment project in Northwest Indiana and another in India.

The US project will support the restoration of approximately 425 acres in Bogus Run, a waterway that feeds into the Kankakee River.

Set to be completed in collaboration with the Shirley Heinze Land Trust at its “Big Eastern” property, the initiative will focus on restoring native sand prairie and woodland habitats through long-term land stewardship. The project will run from 2027 through 2031, alongside maintenance and monitoring in subsequent years.

Planned activities at the site include invasive vegetation management across approximately 325 acres, selective woodland restoration across 200 acres, and the establishment of 30 acres of native sand prairie. Amazon claims that the work will improve regional water retention and availability by more than 110 million gallons (416.4 million liters) annually.

The companies claim that the restoration will also help slow surface runoff, improve soil stability, and encourage more natural infiltration of water back into the ground. In addition to benefits for water sustainability, the restoration is expected to have a net positive impact on local biodiversity, enhancing habitats for more than 1,000 species of plants, insects, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.

The latest project builds on two water restoration initiatives previously announced in October of last year. The projects include one in the Kankakee Aquifer region in northwest Indiana, which seeks to enhance agricultural irrigation efficiency through AI. The second aims to create a “Smart Wetland” in the Kankakee River Watershed. Together, the projects are expected to conserve or improve the quality of at least 100 million gallons (378.5 million liters) of water annually.

Indian River Revitalization

In addition to the project announced in Indiana, Amazon also launched a water quality improvement project in the Adyar River watershed located in Chennai, India.

This project will see Amazon invest 10 crore (US$1 million) in the initiative, which is expected to treat more than 200 million liters (58.2 million gallons) annually. The project is being completed in partnership with SIV Impact Inc, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department.

The project seeks to improve wastewater management in the watershed, which is being increasingly impacted by untreated sewage, industrial effluents, and plastic waste. As part of the project, Amazon will support the deployment of a modular sewage treatment plant on the Buckingham Canal in Kotturpuram, which will treat sewage from the canal and recycle wastewater for multiple non-drinking uses.

“Our country faces critical water challenges, with rivers like the Adyar suffering from severe pollution,” says Abhinav Singh, vice president of operations for Amazon India and Australia. “This project will not only help restore river health but also provide the community with a valuable new source of treated water.”

Amazon has implemented a range of water reclamation and sustainability initiatives to offset the water use associated with its operations. The company has committed to return more water to communities than its data centers directly use by 2030. In total, the company claims that it has more than 45 water replenishment projects globally.

Last month, the company announced two water replenishment projects in Germany, which are expected to return up to 370 million liters (97.7 gallons) of water to local communities. The projects include an urban leak-detection initiative in Frankfurt and a wetland restoration project in the Spessart Forest, located upstream of Frankfurt.
