German combined heat and power systems (CHP) manufacturer 2G Energy has received an order to supply containerized power plants to data centers in North America.
According to 2G, its North American subsidiary will begin delivering the units in the second half of this year, with supply continuing over several years.
The data center customer who has ordered the units has not been disclosed. The company said that the order will comprise a “large number” of containerized plants and also include the plants’ onsite commissioning. It is the largest contract to date that 2G has signed.
“We are delighted about this important strategic step and the strong confidence placed in us by our customer,” said CEO Pablo Hofelich. “2G continues to pursue a systematic regional and product diversification strategy, to which our approach in the Data Center and AI segment is an ideal fit. With more than 10,000 installed units and our high plant availability, we will remain a sought‑after partner in this rapidly growing business field.”
The company develops a range of containerized power solutions, ranging from 50kW to 2.5MW. The majority of the systems are fuel-agnostic and can be powered by biogas, natural gas, hydrogen, and propane. The units can be deployed in a range of ways, including being incorporated in existing buildings or heating systems, or set up separately in a container or engine room.
The company said it is in negotiations with additional customers in the data center segment and expects to receive orders in the low triple-digit megawatt range in the next few months.
2G is headquartered in Heek, Germany, and was founded in 1995. The company develops, produces, and installs CHP, large heat pumps, and peak-load gensets. According to 2G, it has installed more than 10,000 systems in various applications, supplying electrical and thermal energy to a wide range of customers.
The company’s entry into the market reflects growing interest in containerized and off-grid prime power solutions in the data center sector. One of the most notable names in the market is VoltaGrid, which has signed a 2.3GW agreement with Oracle to power the cloud provider’s artificial intelligence data centers with its containerized natural gas-powered system. It has also inked deals with Vantage to supply 1GW of power and xAI.
