The UK Post Office is finally set to sign contracts that will see its reliance on Fujitsu’s controversial Horizon system ending.
As reported by Computer Weekly, the Post Office has awarded technology consulting company Accenture a £322.8 million ($433.94m) contract to take over the running of the IT system that led to more than 900 wrongful convictions of subpostmasters for theft, fraud, and false accounting between 1999 and 2015 due to faulty data.
Accenture will maintain and support the IT infrastructure within the data center and assist with stabilizing the current system and migrating services to the cloud.
The Post Office published a tender calling for bids to replace the Horizon system in July 2025, split into two lots: one for data center operations, application support management, and service and system integration, and another to “transform” the Post Office’s end point of sale (EPOS) technology with software and other services.
Alongside Accenture, US company One View Commerce has won a contract valued at £169.2m ($227.46m) to replace the software system.
“Accenture will work closely with Post Office and Fujitsu, transferring the knowledge, ways of working and key people to enable them to take over operation of the Horizon system,” said the Post Office, in a statement.
“In parallel, both Accenture and One View Commerce will be working together to build the replacement systems to deliver a modern solution that meets the needs of postmasters and our internal teams into the future. These contract awards are part of the wider five-year Post Office transformation plan, which will deliver a digitally enabled, more sustainable business.”
“The priority is to maintain continuity and avoid disruption throughout the transition. Postmasters and partners will be kept informed throughout the process,” said the Post Office. “There are no immediate changes for branches, postmasters, partners, or Post Office colleagues. Day-to-day operations remain the same. Fujitsu will continue to support the Horizon system during the transition until their formal exit date.”
The Post Office’s existing Horizon system is provided by Fujitsu and was first introduced in 1999. According to the Computer Weekly report, Fujitsu made more than £2.5 billion ($3.36bn) from the system since that launch.
While more than 900 were wrongfully convicted, thousands more are eligible to claim compensation. In June 2025, the UK government said that more than £1 billion ($1.35bn) in compensation had been paid out to more than 7,300 postmasters affected by the Horizon IT scandal.
