Netherlands-based automaker Stellantis is plotting a cloud migration and data center consolidation project.

The company has signed a five-year agreement with Microsoft that will see it migrating its workloads and “modernizing” its IT, with the aim of reducing its data center footprint by 60 percent by 2029.

In addition to the migration, Stellantis will also work with Microsoft to co-develop AI, cybersecurity, and engineering capabilities based on Microsoft Azure. In total, they are targeting more than 100 AI initiatives across customer care, product development, and business operations.

“At Stellantis, we have been inventing for more than 100 years with one goal in mind: creating products, services, and experiences customers love,” said Ned Curic, Stellantis’ chief engineering & technology officer.

“As AI rapidly advances, we have been early adopters across our business, from engineering and manufacturing to design and customer interaction, embedding AI directly into our vehicles, from the new digital cabin to the core vehicle Operating System. Through our collaboration with Microsoft, we are accelerating our AI momentum across the enterprise, giving our teams the tools to innovate faster and deliver the products, services, and experiences customers expect from us.”

“Our work with Stellantis reflects a shared ambition to drive AI Transformation responsibly and securely across the automotive value chain,” added Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft’s commercial business. “By combining Stellantis’ global scale and engineering expertise with Microsoft’s trusted cloud, AI, and security platforms, we are delivering real value for millions of drivers worldwide.”

Stellantis is behind numerous automotive brands, including Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, FIAT, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram, Vauxhall, Free2move, and Leasys. The company has manufacturing operations in some 30 countries worldwide.

Information about the company’s existing data center footprint is not publicly shared. DCD has contacted the company to get an idea of its IT estate, in terms of floor space, number of facilities, and IT capacity.
