Australian fiber provider Vocus has restored services for customers that had been impacted by an outage caused by a fiber cable cut earlier today.
As reported by ITNews, the incident occurred at around 10 am AEST for Vocus customers across Victoria and New South Wales.
The website reports that Vocus experienced a major service outage after one of the carrier’s fiber links broke at Broadford, north of Melbourne, at around 8:40 am local time.
Vocus told customers this morning that the cut had impacted intercapital and regional transmission capacity and traffic from two states.
“Vocus has identified a fault on the network affecting inter-capital transmission and regional transmission services due to a fiber break [approximately 32 kilometers from Melbourne],” said Vocus.
According to ITNews, Vocus blamed the cut on civil works.
Vocus technicians were dispatched to the site around 11:15 am to splice a replacement fiber cable before completing repairs later in the evening.
In total, Vocus noted that “approximately 140 services” had been disrupted by the cable cut, though the full extent hasn’t been confirmed.
Founded in 2008, Macquarie-owned Vocus operates more than 50,000km of owned fiber, nearly 15,000km of global submarine cables, and close to 20,000 connected buildings.
In August of last year, Vocus completed its acquisition of TPG Telecom’s (TPG) fiber assets and Enterprise, Government, and Wholesale business for an enterprise value of AU$5.25 billion (US$3.76bn).
