London’s Qalzy secures pre-Seed backing after raising €204k in Kickstarter pre-orders for its AI nutrition scale

Qalzy, a London-based startup building an AI nutrition scale, has today announced a pre-Seed round to expand its AI food-recognition capabilities and accelerate its international launch.

The round was supported by Jenson Ventures and comes after raising nearly €204k ($241k) via Kickstarter pre-orders before its international launch.

“The way most people track calories today is still far too slow, frustrating, and tedious. We built Qalzy to remove that friction by combining precise weighing with AI so users can accurately log meals in seconds. This funding allows us to expand our production capabilities, further improve recognition accuracy, and launch internationally with the right foundation in place,” said Kostas Koukoravas, CEO of Qalzy.

Founded in 2023 by former Microsoft engineers and founders with a prior exit, Qalzy is a nutrition tracking platform that features an AI-powered kitchen scale with a camera, capable of identifying, weighing, and logging food with just one tap. The company states that its technology, which is patent-pending, allows for precise, real-time dietary tracking without manual input.

Qalzy states that its product aims to address a major challenge in nutrition tracking: the time and friction involved in logging meals through traditional apps. According to the company, while image-based calorie trackers are quick, recent research indicates they can be considerably less accurate, with error rates sometimes reaching 65%.

Qalzy claims to combine AI’s speed and simplicity with the accuracy of a kitchen scale, making nutrition tracking practical for everyday health and weight management. The scale weighs approximately 700g (1.54 lbs) and offers a 10-hour battery life, rechargeable via USB-C, with a charging time of 1 hour.

The company claims that it’s using AI that has been trained on millions of ingredient images to identify accurately. If the identification fails, the picture of the food alongside its weight will be there for the users to correct it when they later log in to the app. Qalzy’s AI will continuously learn from errors and enhance its performance.

The company also maintains a “Low Calorie Recipes & Calorie Counting Support” group, which has expanded to 427,000 members. With new capital, initial customer interest, and investor support secured, Qalzy is moving into its next growth stage by launching its AI nutrition scale globally.
