Microsoft has launched its cloud region in Denmark.
Dubbed Denmark East, plans for the cloud region have been ongoing since late 2020.
The company revealed that the region opened this week, noting that it will eventually comprise campuses in Høje Taastrup, Køge, and Roskilde on Zealand.
Mette Kaagaard, general manager, Microsoft Denmark & Iceland, said: “With the opening of Denmark East, we are strengthening Denmark’s digital resilience with a secure-by-default foundation that gives customers greater control, low latency, and local data residency. It marks an important step in our long-term commitment to Denmark, enabling stronger sovereignty controls and new opportunities for innovation across the public and private sectors — built in close collaboration with Danish partners and guided by values such as transparency, accountability, and sustainability.”
The cloud region spans multiple data center campuses; it is not clear how many are operational, though at least the Køge facility has been opened. DCD has contacted Microsoft for clarification on which sites are up and running. According to Microsoft’s website, the cloud region has three availability zones.
Ken Kristensen, Mayor of Køge Municipality, added: “The opening of the new data center highlights that Køge is an attractive location for large, future-proof projects. We have strong infrastructure, attractive business areas, and a strategic location that makes it possible to develop new solutions and create value locally.
“This is exciting for Køge and for the entire surrounding region, and we welcome Microsoft. At the same time, we are pleased that, over time, Microsoft’s new data center will contribute surplus heat to the local district heating network.”
The second phase of construction in Køge began earlier this month.
The acting Mayor of Høje Taastrup Municipality, Kurt Scheelsbeck, another location with data centers for the region, noted that construction was also completed at the data center in the area.
Tomas Breddam, Mayor of Roskilde Municipality, added: “A data center from a global company like Microsoft creates opportunities that go far beyond the building itself. Through collaboration on digital innovation, sustainable solutions, and smarter public services, Microsoft’s presence can help bring new technology, knowledge, and partnerships into our municipality – and in that way create concrete value for both citizens and local businesses over time.”
The company is also known to be developing data centers in Esbjerg and Varde, on the opposite side of the country from Copenhagen.
The cloud region’s energy consumption will be matched with 100 percent carbon-free energy through long-term PPAs. Thus far, Microsoft has signed for 130MW of energy via PPAs, including the 27MW Svinningegården Solar Park project in Holbæk Municipality.
Additionally, the data centers will use HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) for backup power generation where available, and have been designed for zero-water cooling, and will ultimately operate with a PUE of 1.16.
Of the other hyperscalers, Google has a data center in Fredericia, Denmark, while Amazon Web Services operates a Local Zone in Copenhagen.
