Romanian network operator Digi Communications has acquired a 51 percent majority stake in UK alternative network provider (altnet) Whyfibre Limited.
The acquisition of Whyfibre, which owns a fiber network currently under deployment in the counties of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire in southern England, marks Digi’s entrance into the UK market.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, while Digi’s announcement of the deal was scarce on details.
Fiber One Ltd. is the operator of Whyfibre’s network, which Digi notes that it “expects to commence the provision of fixed broadband services on a pilot basis in the near future.”
Founded in 1992, Digi has built up its reputation as a mobile carrier in parts of Europe, initially in its home market, Romania.
The carrier also operates in Spain, where the company had traditionally been an MVNO before acquiring spectrum as part of the Orange-MásMóvil merger. Digi has also launched mobile services in Portugal and Belgium.
Beyond mobile services, Digi also provides Internet services for its customers.
The company’s play to acquire a UK altnet is an interesting one, with the market tipped for significant consolidation in the coming years as incumbents Openreach and Virgin Media dominate.
