Swiss cloud and hosting firm Metanet has announced the migration of its corporate data into two data centers in Switzerland.
According to a statement published by the company last week, Metanet is constructing new server racks, networking equipment, and storage in data center operator Green’s Metro-Campus Zürich in Dielsdorf municipality and Metro-Campus Zürich West in Lupfig municipality to facilitate the move.
The Dielsdorf site will be the primary operations site, while Lupfig will be Metanet’s backup location.
The entire operation will cost CHF 2.5 million ($3.1 million).
“With this investment, we are rebuilding our hosting platform from the ground up rather than expanding a historically grown infrastructure,” Metanet’s CEO and CTO, Stefan Leuenberger, told DCD. “By consolidating our systems into two newly built data center locations, we can operate our primary and backup environments with a much clearer architecture and significantly reduced complexity.”
“With this investment, we are further expanding our position as a Swiss hosting and cloud specialist and creating an infrastructure that guarantees our customers the highest availability and performance, both now and in the future,” added Leuenberger in the company-shared statement.
While a “migration” of sorts, Metanet has said it is not physically moving any hardware, instead opting to build the infrastructure from scratch and just moving the data.
Founded in 2000 in Zurich, Metanet provides cloud and web hosting services. The firm leased 60 server racks from data center operators SenseLAN, GTT, and Equinix across five locations and six rooms in and around Zürich.
The construction of new racks at the Dielsdorf and Lupfig campuses will not only improve efficiency and service quality, wrote Metanet’s communications manager Tom Brühwiler in a statement, but also allow it to designate primary and backup sites for its infrastructure more efficiently.
Work on the new racks has already been underway for several weeks. The eventual data migration will take place in stages defined by product.
“For the vast majority of our customers, this process will run completely in the background: no interruptions, no action required,” said Brühwiler. “With more complex setups such as VPS, managed servers, or custom solutions, there may be occasional brief interruptions or the need for adjustments. In any case, we will inform affected customers directly and in advance so that they can prepare accordingly.”
Metro-Campus Zürich in Dielsdorf and Metro-Campus Zürich West in Lupfig both host hyperscale-level data centers, all equipped with redundant power supplies, ambient air-cooling, and multi-layer physical security systems. According to its operator Green, Metro-Campus Zürich encompasses two data centers with 35 MW of compute, in addition to offices, an integrated substation, and a district heating network.
Zürich West, meanwhile, is described as “Switzerland’s first high-density data center,” with 59,201 sq ft (5,500 sqm) of usable space and fiber-optic connections to 50 different carriers.
