A data center with a maximum capacity of 40MW could be built in an industrial park near Butzbach, a town located approximately 35km (22 miles) north of German data center hotspot Frankfurt.
The project is still in its early stages and will be carried out with several partners, including energy company RheinEnergie.
The first phase of the facility will require up to 10MW of electrical power, and can be expanded depending on demand. It will be built on a land parcel approximately 30,000 sqm (323,000 sq ft) large.
Construction work is expected to begin within the next few years.
Details about the facility are somewhat sparse, and it is unclear who the data center developer and end-user will be. The name of the “northern industrial park” was also not mentioned
But the town says that discussions with investors are already “advanced.”
Butzbach is not one of Germany’s data center hotspots.
German data center operator firstcolo operates a data center in the neighboring town of Rosbach von der Hohe, but most of the data centers in the state of Hesse, as well as the country, are located in Frankfurt.
