A new data center development could be coming to Finnish Lapland.

Finnish energy company Pohjan Voima is looking to develop a project in Keminmaa.

In other Finnish news, Compute Nordic is expanding its landholdings in Mikkeli, while another company is targeting a development in Närpiö on the country’s west coast.

Pohjan Voima targets Lapland project

Finnish energy company Pohjan Voima is aiming to develop a 60-hectare plot in the Mykä area, approximately 10 kilometers north of the Keminmaa municipal center.

Full details of the planned project haven’t been shared. A municipal newsletter from January said construction could start in two years.

Keminmaa is a municipality of northern Finland. It is located near the towns of Kemi and Tornio in the Lapland region.

“The project would be of great importance to Keminmaa. It could attract technology companies to the region on a wider scale,” said Keminmaa Mayor Hannele Matinlassi. “I see the data center as a really good thing for the residents and companies.”

According to Pohjan Voima’s website, the company will make a final investment decision on the project in 2027/2028.

“Based on preliminary studies, the Mykä area is well-suited for a data center. However, we do not know the area as well as the residents of Keminmaa. That is why we are listening carefully to local views,” Pohjan Voima CEO Tomi Mäkipelto says on the project page.

Pohjan Voima has more than 20 wind and solar projects in operation and development totaling more than 2GW, and is also investing in battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Swedish renewables firm Arise AB (itself recently acquired by Aneo group) acquired a majority stake in Pohjan Voima in 2023. Insurance company LähiTapiola and the current management own the remainder.

Compute Nordics expands landholdings in Mikkeli

Most of Finland’s data centers are located in the country’s capital, Helsinki. But Finland’s environment, abundant land, and cheap green energy have attracted increasing numbers of data center developers, with the Finnish Data Center Association estimating that live capacity in the country will increase from 285MW in 2025 to 1.5GW in 2030.

Established operators, including the likes of Verne, Equinix, and atNorth, have a presence in Finland, while new entrants such as Polarnode, FCDC, Arcem, and Hyperco are planning multiple developments across the country. International operators, including QTS, Prime, Pure, and DayOne, are also looking to develop in Finland.

Yle reports Compute Nordic Finland Oy has recently purchased a second plot of land in Mikkeli for a data center. Construction on the first 10-hectare plot could start in March for a 2028 launch date. Two 100MW single-story buildings are planned, according to project contractor NYAB.

Compute Nordic reportedly operates one site in Sogndal, Norway.

Mikkeli is a city in, and the regional capital of, South Savo, located in the Finnish Lakeland. FCDC Corp, Orka Technologies, and Regant Oy are also targeting projects in Mikkeli.

Data center coming to Närpes

Another data center could be coming to the west coast of Finland.

Bess Solutions Finland Oy is planning a facility on a 12.6-hectare site near Närpiö in Pirttikylä.

Närpes is a town in Ostrobothnia, located on the west coast of the country. Full details on the multi-billion-dollar project have not been shared.

The campus will be developed next to EPV Alueverkko Oy’s substation. Construction could begin in the fall of 2026, and is scheduled to be completed in early 2028.

BESS Solutions has reportedly signed an agreement with a US-listed company, the name of which will be announced later.

“Our goal is to diversify the economic structure of Närpiö and increase the number of jobs in different parts of the city. We are following with great interest projects that can help us achieve these goals,” Närpiö Mayor Mikaela Björklund told Yle.
