A new large-scale data center campus could be coming to the southwest corner of the UK.

First reported by the Bridgewater Mercury, Express Distribution Park has filed potential plans for a data center campus in Bridgewater, Somerset.

The company, via Lichfields, requested Somerset Council’s formal opinion on the scope of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to be submitted in conjunction with proposals for the Somerset Data Centre at land at Horsey. The council has approved the initial screening request, paving the way for a more detailed application.

Though full details haven’t been shared, the campus would total 250,000 sqm (2.69 million sq ft) across multiple buildings and up to 500MW of capacity. If fully built out, the campus would be one of the largest in the UK.

The 130-hectare site is located to the north of Bridgwater, with a solar farm and the M5 motorway running immediately to the west of the development.

It is unclear if this is a speculative project or if an end-user has been secured.

Somerset, a county in South West England, has very few data centers. Tata is listed as operating a site in Highbridge, and the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust operates a data center on-site.
