Google has signed a 100MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with German power company EnBW for energy from the He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.
The 15-year deal will see the hyperscaler offtake power from the under-construction wind farm, which, when complete, will have an installed capacity of 960MW. Located 90 kilometers (55.9 miles) northwest of the island of Borkum and 110km (68.3 miles) west of Helgoland, the project is expected to reach commercial operations in spring 2026.
“With He Dreiht and our PPA with Google, we are demonstrating that large-scale, clean energy solutions are already a reality today. Together, we are helping to power innovation and progress with renewable energy – reliably and around the clock,” said Peter Heydecker, member of the EnBW Board of Management for Sustainable Generation Infrastructure.
According to Google, the PPA will support the company in its efforts to achieve 24/7 carbon-free energy across its global operations.
“Meeting the demand for AI infrastructure requires direct investment in the energy systems that make this technology possible,” said Adam Elman, director of Sustainability EMEA at Google. “By contracting for new wind power from EnBW, we are bringing more clean energy online in Germany to power our operations, while accelerating the broader transition to a more sustainable electricity grid.”
EnBW has already signed several PPAs tied to the He Dreiht project, including a 100MW deal with Deutsche Telekom’s energy subsidiary PASM in 2023.
The latest PPA expands Google’s clean energy procurement portfolio within the German market. Last month, the company expanded a 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) partnership with renewable energy developer Engie, which will see the companies integrate battery energy storage systems (BESS) and additional renewable Power Purchase Agreements into the CFE mechanism.
The companies originally signed the CFE agreement back in 2021, where Engie was appointed as Google’s German CFE manager. In addition to the CFE agreement, the companies also inked a 140MW PPA generated by a portfolio of solar and wind plants in Germany.
Google recently announced that it would invest €5.5bn ($6.38bn) into AI infrastructure and office locations in Germany between 2026 and 2029. The investment is expected to support the development of a new facility in Dietzenbach – a town to the south of Frankfurt – as well as continued investments in Google’s existing campus in Hanau. Google currently operates two cloud regions in Germany, located in Berlin and Frankfurt. The Berlin region was launched in 2023, and Frankfurt in 2017.
