Amazon Web Services (AWS) has signed a 110MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with German renewable energy developer RWE.
The PPA is tied to the under-development 900MW Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm in the eastern German North Sea. The wind farm is part of a larger cluster, being developed as part of a joint venture between RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management. Its sister wind farm, Nordseecluster A, has a planned capacity of 600MW and is scheduled for commissioning next year. Nordseecluster B is scheduled for commissioning in 2029.
“Germany is transitioning to an energy future that is modern and carbon-free, and this agreement with RWE helps advance that vision. As Amazon works toward net-zero carbon by 2040, we continue enabling projects that strengthen Germany’s renewable energy capacity for generations to come,” said Rocco Bräuniger, country manager of Amazon in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
According to the companies, the PPA builds on a Strategic Framework Agreement signed between the two companies in June 2025. The June tie-up saw AWS agree to provide RWE with cloud services to support its digitalization process, as well as support AWS’s drive to power its operations through low-carbon energy sources.
“Power Purchase Agreements like this one with Amazon are crucial for accelerating Germany’s decarbonisation while strengthening long‑term security of supply. By enabling large‑scale offshore projects such as the Nordseecluster, we can bring more reliable, carbon‑free electricity onto the grid and support a resilient energy system,” said Ulf Kerstin, chief commercial officer at RWE Supply & Trading.
The PPA is AWS’s fourth large-scale offshore wind PPA in Germany. For example, in December 2021, it signed a PPA with Ørsted for 100MW from Ørsted’s 900MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 Offshore Wind Farm in Germany.
