Meta has signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Spanish renewable energy firm Zelestra for energy from the 176 MWdc (136MWac) Skull Creek Solar Plant in Texas.

Located in Anderson, Texas, the project is currently under development and is expected to reach operational status in May 2027. When completed, it will deliver power into the ERCOT grid.

According to Meta, the PPA will support its efforts to add new clean energy to the grid and support its drive to match its operations with 100 percent renewable energy.

Phil North, Zelestra’s US CEO, said: “Our clean energy collaboration with Meta is gathering momentum across the US. We are delighted to welcome full operations at Jasper County and the start of construction at two further major projects, at the same time as closing another major agreement that will enable the construction of Skull Creek in Texas.”

Following the PPA, the companies have now signed renewable supply agreements for approximately 1.2GWdc of capacity across seven projects in the US, all of which are expected to come online by 2028.

In January of last year, the two firms inked four Environmental Attribute Purchase Agreements (EAPAs) to facilitate the construction of four solar projects in Texas that will deliver power to Meta’s data centers in the region. The projects are located in Hopkins, Lamar, Lampasas, and Henderson Counties and have a combined capacity of 595MWac (720MWdc).

Before this, in April 2024, the companies inked a 210MWac EAPA for energy from two solar projects in Indiana. As part of the most recent announcement, Zelestra reported that it had achieved commercial operations at the 81MWdc (60MWac) Jasper County Solar Project in Indiana, tied to the April 2024 agreement.

Zelestra has expanded its presence in the US market over the past few years. According to the firm, it has approximately 6.6GWdc of renewable projects under development across various states. In June 2024, the company went through a rebrand, changing its name from Solarpack to Zelestra. The company said this was part of a broader move toward a more client-centric approach and a focus on a wider range of renewable technologies.

The latest PPA builds on Meta’s expanding renewable portfolio in the Lone Star state. Last month, the company signed a long-term deal with Origis Energy to offtake power from the 303MWdc Greyhound A Solar project in West Odessa, Texas.

Before this, in December, the company signed 11 PPAs with NextEra Energy for up to 2.5GW of power across the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Southwest Power Pool, and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator markets.
