Nordic data center firm atNorth is to develop a second data center in Stockholm, Sweden.
The company this week announced its plans to build an additional data center in Stockholm, known as SWE02. The site is scheduled to go live in Q4 2027.
The 30MW facility will be built in close proximity to the firm’s original Swedish data center, SWE01, which opened in March 2022. The development will include a new substation built by Ellevio.
“The expansion of our presence in Stockholm is a clear reflection of the growing demand for responsible data center operators who can combine technical excellence with sustainable operations,” said Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth. “As high-performance digital infrastructure becomes increasingly business critical, companies are seeking partners who prioritize energy efficiency, sustainable design, and long-term community impact – values that are deeply embedded in atNorth’s growth strategy.”
SWE02 will be enabled with heat reuse capabilities in collaboration with Stockholm Exergi.
“We are proud to collaborate with atNorth to recycle heat to meet a local need within Stockholm,” said Peter Sivengård, business project manager at Stockholm Exergi. “By working together, we can ensure efficient use of our resources and contribute to our country’s circular economy.”
The company’s SWE01 data center is located in Kista, a suburb of Stockholm. It offers 12MW of capacity across 6,400 sqm (68,890 sq ft). The site is home to Swedish cloud provider 6G AI Sweden and AlphaTon Capital Corp.
“We are delighted that atNorth has chosen the Kista area for an additional energy-efficient data center campus that will contribute to the city’s climate efforts,” said Karin Wanngård, Mayor of Stockholm. “The development and subsequent operational phase of this data center will bring employment opportunities for our community and further position Stockholm as a hub for digital infrastructure excellence.”
Nordic operator atNorth currently operates seven data centers across Sweden, Iceland, and Finland, with more in development in Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. The new Stockholm facility will bring the company’s total number of Nordic data centers in operation and development to eleven.
Earlier this year, atNorth sold its HPC-as-a-Service offering, Gompute, to Advania, after previously acquiring the Swedish company in 2023 and taking over a data center in Gothenburg.
AtNorth was formed as Advania Data Centers in 2012 from three components: Skyrr, a public sector IT specialist in Iceland; Kerfi, a Swedish outfit with roots in a Nokia spin-off called Datapoint, and Hands from Norway. The company de-merged from the Advania Group in 2017 and rebranded to atNorth in 2020. Swiss investment manager Partners Group acquired the company in December 2021.
“AtNorth’s sustainable data center solutions mirror society’s growing need for data resources and the role of electrification to ensure responsible, fossil-free operations. Ellevio are pleased to build and provide long-term grid connection and help the SWE02 campus deliver sustainable IT infrastructure for a modern society,” added Nils Rönnbäck, director connections industry and productions at Ellevio.
US colo giants Digital Realty and Equinix are reportedly competing to acquire atNorth, according to a recent report.
Other data center operators around Stockholm include Digital Realty, Conapto, Stack, Kolo, Bahnhof, Equinix, and others.
