Edge data center developer nLighten has signed a 24/7 renewable supply agreement with German energy giant Uniper.

The deal will see Uniper supply renewable energy to all of nLighten’s German data center locations. As part of the agreement, Uniper will supply both standard power and a guaranteed base load supply of hydroelectric power.

“This partnership represents an important step forward for our German operations. The baseload hydropower component provides security and transparency that is particularly valuable in the German market,” said Francesco Marasco, VP of Energy Operations and Sustainability.

“Even during periods of low renewable generation from variable sources, we maintain a consistent foundation of carbon-free energy. This agreement demonstrates our commitment to moving beyond traditional annual certificate-based approaches toward hourly traceable renewable energy procurement.”

In addition, Uniper will provide nLighten with detailed renewable energy data, certified by an independent body (TÜV Süd), on an hourly basis rather than annual renewable energy certificates. According to the companies, the structure will allow nLighten to add renewable energy sources, such as hydropower, wind, or solar, when demand increases in its German portfolio, with Uniper acting as the balancing party.

Andreas Gemballa, CCO at Uniper Energy Sales, added: “By combining flexible power supply with guaranteed base load hydropower and hourly traceability, our 24/7 solution offers the accountability and security that are essential for today’s modern digital infrastructure. I am confident that this is the beginning of a strong and mutually beneficial partnership between our companies.”

nLighten currently operates ten Edge data center facilities in the German market, including in Berlin, Munich, and Stuttgart. The company acquired the bulk of this portfolio from sister company Exa Infrastructure in 2023. Both companies are owned by I Squared Capital, with nLighten formally launched in 2023.

The company also operates seven data centers in France, acquired from Euclyde Data Centers in 2023, as well as several in Spain, Switzerland, and Belgium, acquired in 2024. In total, the company operates 34 data centers, all within the European market.

The company has signed several renewable supply agreements to power its portfolio of Edge facilities. Last November, the company signed a deal with Axpo to power its entire French data center portfolio. Before this, in June, the company signed a deal with UK renewable developer Conrad Energy to power its portfolio of ten data centers within the UK market.
