Tallinn-based RAIKU Packaging has been selected as one of just 13 startups worldwide to join L’Oréal’s newly launched Sustainable Innovation Accelerator, a €100 million, five-year program backing breakthrough sustainability technologies. RAIKU develops 100% natural, compostable packaging materials designed to replace fossil-based plastics, combining premium aesthetics with strong shock absorption and a production process that reportedly reduces resource use by more than 90%. Through the accelerator, RAIKU will pilot and validate its material at industrial scale with the aim of integrating it into global beauty supply chains, using the program to accelerate commercialization and expand its role in reducing packaging-related carbon footprints across consumer industries.
RAIKU develops packaging materials made entirely from natural fibres, positioned as an alternative to plastic-based protective packaging. The company says its material is designed to offer shock absorption while using fewer resources in production than conventional packaging materials. The technology is intended for use in sectors such as cosmetics and luxury goods, where protective packaging is required for transport and presentation.
The programme, which runs for 12 months, is part of L’Oréal’s broader efforts to identify technologies that could address sustainability-related challenges in areas including packaging, manufacturing processes, and materials. Participation does not imply a commercial agreement, and selected companies are expected to go through a structured evaluation process to assess technical performance and potential fit with L’Oréal’s operations.
RAIKU has previously received €5.6 million in funding support from the European Innovation Council and has worked with clients including LVMH, according to publicly available information.
The programme is delivered in collaboration with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. No financial terms related to RAIKU’s participation have been disclosed, and L’Oréal has not commented on whether the selected technologies will move beyond pilot or testing phases.
