Pan-African data center firm Open Access Data Centres (OADC) is acquiring a portfolio of NTT data centers in South Africa.
The Competition Commission of South Africa (CCSA) last week announced it had approved the proposed transaction, though there have been no announcements from the companies involved.
According to the regulator, the deal is set to see OADC affiliates, OADC Propco and OADC Opco, acquire seven data centers currently owned and operated by NTT Data SA.
The facilities being acquired are located in Bloemfontein, Cape Town, East London, Bryanston and Parklands in Johannesburg, Gqerberha, and Umhlanga.
The deal includes associated infrastructure, equipment, supplier contracts, and lease agreements at each of these locations, as well as the property on which the Parklands data center is situated, according to the CCSA.
“The commission is of the view that the proposed transaction is unlikely to substantially lessen or prevent competition in any market,” the CCSA said.
NTT, OADC, and OADC owner WIOCC are yet to announce any deal. DCD has reached out for more information.
NTT acquired Dimension Data in 2010, taking over a number of smaller legacy facilities in South Africa totaling around 10MW. The company opened the first phase of a 12MW hyperscale-focused facility in Johannesburg (JOH1) in 2021. Johannesburg-based Dimension Data can trace its roots back to 1983.
Founded in 2021 and owned by African wholesale network firm WIOCC, OADC operates six hyperscale data centers and more than 30 Edge sites in South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria.
In South Africa, the company has facilities in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town (x2), and is also rolling out dozens of Edge sites across the country.
Formed in 2008, African wholesale network firm WIOCC is part of consortia for the EASSy, EIG, WACS, TE North, SEA-ME-WE 5, and the Facebook-led 2Africa cable systems.
