Data center developer Global Technical Realty (GTR) is expanding into Switzerland.
The company this week announced CH One, a 24MW facility located in Zurich. The three-story facility will span 11,315 sqm (121,793 sq ft) across three data halls. The first phase is expected to go live in 2028.
The facility will feature a rooftop solar system, and will make its waste heat available for local heating networks.
The company has appointed HIAG Immobilien Schweiz as the developer and Goldbeck Rhomberg as the general contractor.
“We know how important balancing the synergy of global and technical experience with local insight is,” said Franek Sodzawiczny, CEO & founder at GTR. “There are many considerations that data center developers and operators must navigate during planning and construction – such as zoning, environmental considerations, and building and safety regulations – we have the best industry brains working closely with us, at every stage of every project.”
The company said the facility will be part of ‘Campus Reichhold’, a 7.5-hectare former industrial site being developed by GTR into a commercial hub.
Investment firm KKR announced it was committing $1 billion to set up a new hyperscale data center player in Europe in May 2020.
As well as two sites in London, GTR is also developing data centers in Petah Tikva, Israel (due for delivery later this year), and Barcelona, Spain.
“We’ve had conviction for years that Europe needs more high-quality, scalable, and sustainable digital infrastructure – and CH One delivers exactly that,” said Waldemar Szlezak, global head of digital infrastructure, KKR. “Zurich sits at the center of Europe’s cloud and AI network map, and this development positions GTR to meet the accelerating needs of hyperscalers and enterprise customers. We’re pleased to support the team as they execute another important milestone in their growth.”
GTR founder Sodzawiczny previously founded two British data center colocation providers: Sentrum, which was sold to Digital Realty for around $1 billion in 2012, and Zenium, which sold to CyrusOne for $442 million in 2017.
