Microsoft has received the initial approval for its planned data center campuses in the Aragón region in Spain.
The regional government has given its green light to the “Plan of General Interest of Aragón” (PIGA), dubbed MSFT Region, that will see the development of three campuses in La Muela, Villamayor de Gállego, and Zaragoza, as well as their interconnection via fiber optics.
The approval was given by the Minister of Development, Housing, Logistics, and Territorial Cohesion, Octavio López.
The campuses will span a total of 283.79 hectares (701.3 acres), with the largest campus being the La Muela site. La Muela will span 146.12 hectares (361 acres), Villamayer de Gállego 80.67 (199.4 acres), and Zaragoza 57 (140.85 acres).
Additionally, Microsoft will install 240 kilometers (149.13 miles) of fiber optic cable and 187km (116.2 miles) of conduit.
The project is expected to need between 1,000 and 2,000 construction workers during each phase, and around 900 permanent employees once completed.
The building costs alone for the three campuses are expected to exceed €5.3bn ($6.17bn).
The project will now be subject to a public information and participation process for a period of 30 business days, starting once it is published in the Official Gazette of Aragón.
“The initial approval of the PIGA (AragónInvestment Plan) represents a significant step in the development of Microsoft’s data center project in Aragón. Following its final approval, we will begin simultaneous construction of the first phase of the project at the three planned locations in La Muela, Villamayor de Gállego, and Zaragoza. This project reaffirms Microsoft’s commitment to driving innovation, economic growth, supporting the Aragónese technology industry, and creating jobs in the region,” said a Microsoft spokesperson.
Microsoft has an existing and growing data center presence in Aragón around Zaragoza.
Microsoft first shared plans for a cloud region in Aragón in October 2023, before announcing plans to invest another €6.69bn ($7.16bn) in developing new data centers in the region last year.
Microsoft also committed last year to investing $2.1bn in cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Spain over the next two years. In March 2025, it committed a further €2.9 billion ($3bn) to developing another data center campus in Zaragoza, on a plot adjacent to Puerto Venecia.
Elsewhere in Spain, Microsoft has a cloud region in Madrid that opened in June 2024.
Amazon launched an AWS cloud region in Aragón in November 2022; reportedly also around Zaragoza in the Huesca Logistics Platform, in Villanueva de Gállego, and in El Burgo de Ebro.
