BT Group is considering launching a low-cost mobile brand in the UK.
As reported by the Financial Times, BT could launch a new brand or explore an acquisition of an existing MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) to complement its existing EE brand.
An MVNO is a mobile network carrier that offers services without owning its network infrastructure.
Such a move isn’t uncommon with mobile operators. Vodafone has its own sub-brand Voxi, while Three has Smarty.
The FT reports that BT is also considering the low-cost mobile brand as part of plans to battle new entrants hitting the UK telecoms market, such as Revolut and Monzo.
Both Revolut and Monzo announced plans earlier this year to offer mobile services.
BT has previously offered budget mobile plans via its broadband subsidiary Plusnet, but retired the mobile service last year.
In a statement, BT has said that it currently has no intention of changing its mobile offering.
“We regularly review our offerings across all our brands to ensure our customers have access to the best products and services on the best network. At present, we have no plans to change our mobile offering,” said a BT Consumer spokesperson.
