Bitcoin mining firm Hive Digital has announced plans to expand its hydroelectric-powered Yguazú data center in Paraguay by 100MW.

The expansion will increase the data center’s capacity to 400MW, with the facility powered solely by hydroelectric power from the Itaipu Dam on the Paraná River, located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. The hydroelectric dam has an installed capacity of 14GW, comprising 20 turbines with a capacity of 700MW each.

The company initially acquired the site from Bitfarms in January 2025. The expansion is expected to begin construction in early 2026, with full commissioning expected in Q3 of 2026. The expansion aims to increase Hive’s global Bitcoin target to 35 Exahash per second by 2026.

“Our expansion in Paraguay reinforces Hive’s long-term vision: scaling sustainable, low-cost digital infrastructure powered entirely by renewable energy. Operating across nine time zones, five languages, and three nations, Hive continues to execute with efficiency, innovation, and first-mover advantage,” said Frank Holmes, Hive’s executive chairman.

The expansion follows the successful completion of Phase 1 in April 2025 and Phase 2 in September 2025, which brought the facility to its current capacity of 300MW.

According to the company, the Yguazú site already produces 8.5 BTC per day. Following the expansion, it will be the largest facility of its kind in the country. The growth of Paraguay’s Bitcoin sector has been supported by the current government’s pro-crypto regulations, which have exempted mining energy use from taxes until 2027. The rate only applies to crypto-regulated mining operations.

“This additional 100MW expansion brings Yguazú to full design capacity. Our engineering teams are ready—civil works and substation pads are complete,” said Gabriel Lamas, country president of Hive Paraguay.

Once the expansion is complete, Hive will have a total renewable infrastructure footprint of 540MW across three countries. This includes 400MW in Paraguay and 140MW across Canada and Sweden.

Hive was founded in 2017 and has operations across Canada, Sweden, and Paraguay. Its data centers serve both Bitcoin and high-performance computing (HPC) clients. In June, the company acquired a 7.2MW data center in Toronto, Canada, for HPC and AI uses.

Known initially as Hive Cloud, Buzz offers access to Nvidia H100s, A6000s, A5000s, A40s, and H200s. Its cloud currently totals 2.2MW of capacity across Stockholm, Sweden (800kW) and Montreal, Canada (1.4MW).

In Canada, Hive currently has a 30MW mining operation in Lachute, Quebec, and a 70MW site in New Brunswick. The Lachute site reportedly uses its waste heat to warm a 200,000 sq ft (18,580 sqm) factory making swimming pools. The company also operates a 32MW site in Boden, Sweden, and will soon heat a 90,000 sq ft (8,361 sqm) greenhouse growing tomatoes and cucumbers.
