T-Mobile US’ CEO, Mike Sievert, plans to step down and be replaced by chief operating officer Srini Gopalan.
The announcement comes a few months after German publication Handelsblatt reported that Sievert was preparing to hand over the position to Gopalan.
Gopalan will take over as CEO on November 1, 2025, while Sievert will assume a new role at the carrier as vice chairman.
T-Mobile noted that Sievert’s role will see him continue in a management role and on the board at the telco.
“I couldn’t be more excited to announce Srini Gopalan as our next CEO,” Sievert said.
“Srini has been an incredible partner in shaping the future of T-Mobile as well as instrumental in leading our record growth this year and driving initiatives to serve customers in new ways and win them for life. One fact has become crystal clear: Srini is ready to lead.”
Gopalan, who previously headed Deutsche Telekom’s Germany business, moved to T-Mobile earlier this year.
Deutsche Telekom is the majority owner of T-Mobile, owning a 51 percent stake in the carrier.
“Mike has done a phenomenal job transforming T-Mobile into the world’s most successful telecom and a disruptive innovator for customers. By almost every possible metric, T-Mobile is better, stronger, and faster today than when Mike took the helm nearly six years ago,” Gopalan said.
Sievert replaced John Legere as CEO of T-Mobile in 2020, taking charge the day T-Mobile closed its merger and acquisition of Sprint.
During his tenure, the company has ramped up its 5G rollout, carved out a satellite connectivity deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX via its Starlink satellites, and has pursued high-profile acquisitions, including UScellular, plus fiber acquisitions, including Lumos and Metronet, outlining its fiber ambitions. He joined T-Mobile in 2012 as chief marketing officer.
Gopalan has worked in the telecoms industry since 2009, when he joined T-Mobile UK as chief marketing officer. He then took on roles at Vodafone and India’s Bharti Airtel, before joining T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom in 2016.
Previously, he was the senior vice president for banking firm Capital One in the UK.
