Vodafone Romania and Digi Romania have announced deals to acquire separate chunks of OTE subsidiary Telekom Romania Mobile Communications (TKRM).
As part of the agreement, Digi has paid €40 million ($47m) to acquire certain spectrum and telecom tower assets from Telekom Romania, plus the carrier’s prepaid business.
Vodafone has agreed to pay €30m ($35m) to acquire the rest of Telekom Romania, which includes spectrum, towers, and also the telco’s post-paid customer base.
“This transaction strengthens our position in Romania by increasing our local scale and unlocking significant synergy benefits. It supports our strategy of building strong positions in growing markets, which enables us to invest in the high-quality networks our customers rely on,” said Margherita Della Valle, chief executive of Vodafone Group.
OTE has been pushing to exit Romania for some time, signing an MoU with Vodafone and Digi last year to explore a sale.
The transactions, which will net OTE €70m ($82m), are expected to be finalized next year.
OTE is a subsidiary of Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, with TKRM operating under the Telekom brand.
Telekom Romania was formed in 2014 when Romtelecom and Cosmote România combined mobile and fixed services into a single brand.
OTE previously sold its controlling stake in TKRM’s fixed arm to Orange Romania.
