Smartvatten, a Finnish provider of digital water management tools, has acquired LeakLook, a domestic company focused on submetering and IoT-based monitoring for real estate. With the deal, LeakLook’s staff will join Smartvatten’s 150 employees, strengthening the company’s technical capabilities in IoT and AI. The combined platforms now cover water use in more than 40,000 properties across 30 countries. The acquisition is expected to expand LeakLook’s solutions across Smartvatten’s European network and support the development of new technologies aimed at detecting leaks, inefficiencies, and irregular water use—an area of growing concern as water scarcity and costs rise in Europe.
Smartvatten provides digital water management solutions for property portfolios, municipalities, and utilities across Europe. Its platform collects and analyzes real-time data from water systems to help track usage, identify irregularities, and support long-term resource planning.
LeakLook specializes in submetering and IoT-enabled water monitoring for real estate. Its technology is used in complex building infrastructures to provide detailed data on water consumption, helping property owners and operators detect leaks and inefficiencies.
With the acquisition, LeakLook’s employees will become part of Smartvatten’s global team of 150 experts dedicated to water, and strengthen Smartvatten’s R&D capabilities in the areas of IoT and AI analytics. The acquisition is part of Smartvatten’s long-term strategy to become the leading European water measurement and analytics platform. Combined, the two companies monitor real time water flows at over 40 000 properties in more than 30 countries, making this one of the biggest acquisitions in the market for water monitoring and analytics of commercial real estate in Europe.
“This merger brings together two companies aligned by a shared mission: to enable the most efficient use of water through scalable, digital solutions, helping to reduce pressure on the world´s increasingly scarce water resources. Together with LeakLook, we are not just growing in scale—we are deepening our ability to serve customers with an even broader range of advanced solutions and services,” said Petter Quinsgaard, CEO of Smartvatten. “Our combined capabilities open up new opportunities for smarter water management for property owners, building operators and tenants alike.”
With a shared roadmap guiding their efforts, the integrated team will concentrate on developing the next generation of IoT-enabled water monitoring devices and AI powered water analytics to help proactively identify leakages, inefficiencies and irregularities in water usage. The development is aimed at tackling Europe’s increasingly pressing challenges with water scarcity, and sharply rising water prices.
LeakLook’s proven solutions will now be introduced across Europe through Smartvatten’s well-established sales, support, and partner network. This includes further expansion into commercial and residential real estate markets, water utilities seeking advanced insights based on more detailed, real-time usage data, and insurers seeking to reduce risk exposure to property damage.
“This acquisition is about more than expanding our footprint—it’s about shaping the future of sustainable water management. By bringing together the strengths of both companies, we’re building a platform that can scale with the evolving demands of our customers while driving real environmental progress. The operational efficiencies we unlock will be reinvested directly into the areas that matter most: product innovation, customer support, and service excellence,” says Petter Quinsgaard, CEO, Smartvatten.
“Joining forces with Smartvatten allows us to elevate our impact far beyond what we could achieve alone. Together, we’re not only creating a stronger technical offering, but a truly customer-centric ecosystem that’s ready for the future. Our clients will benefit from faster response times, wider solution coverage, and from our expertise in smart IoT network solutions, which deliver genuine long-term value,” states Karl Sandelin, CEO, LeakLook / AQVA.IO Oy.
“As Founder, I see this as the ideal next chapter in our journey. Smartvatten’s culture and technological strengths mirror our own, and together we can create solutions that go beyond what any company has delivered before. Together with our owners, we believe this partnership is the right choice — a natural continuation of our mission, now with greater reach and resources,” says Jarkko Mäkivaara, Chairman, LeakLook / AQVA.IO Oy.
