The UK government’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded Google Cloud a £400 million ($542.12m) contract.

Under the contract, Google will deliver a UK sovereign cloud capability to give the MoD a secure cloud platform. The offering will be built on Google Distributed Cloud Air-Gapped.

According to the MoD, the contract aligns with its Strategic Defence Review, which seeks to use cloud infrastructure for “advanced capabilities and secure information processing, including the latest cybersecurity and AI technologies.”

Google Distributed Cloud Air-Gapped is Google’s on-prem cloud offering that ensures it is completely separate from the Internet. It was launched in July 2024, and has since been adopted by the German armed forces and the Singaporean Science and Tech Agency.

“Google Cloud is dedicated to supporting the UK government’s mission to develop a robust and resilient infrastructure and harness the latest technology innovations,” said Tara Brady, EMEA president, Google Cloud. “This partnership will enable the MOD to accelerate its digital modernization efforts while maintaining the highest levels of security and data sovereignty.”

General Sir James Hockenhull KBE ADC Gen, Commander, Cyber & Specialist Operations Command, UK MoD, said: “The Ministry of Defence is committed to utilising next-generation technology and AI to enhance our operational capabilities and ensure the security of the United Kingdom. This partnership is a critical component of our digital transformation strategy, and we are pleased to partner with Google Cloud to deliver a secure and resilient cloud environment for our highly sensitive data.”

The deal will further create jobs and help to upskill those working for the MoD.

In July 2025, Google Cloud signed an agreement with the UK government to help it tackle its reliance on legacy IT. Announced during the Google Cloud Summit 2025 in London, the two hope to save taxpayer money by replacing old technology.
