Utrecht-based CleanTech startup Zympler powers up with €1.5 million to tackle grid woes

With demand for electricity skyrocketing and grid capacity facing structural delays for the next decade or more, Zympler, a Dutch energy software startup, has raised €1.5 million in Seed funding to help businesses take control of their energy usage.

The round was led by Dutch investor group Arches Capital, with participation from regional co-investor ROM Utrecht Region. The capital injection comes from the Startup Innovation Fund (SIF), supported by the Province of Utrecht and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Tom Selten, Co-founder, says, “With Zympler, you choose simplicity over complexity. It’s like a digital Chief Energy Officer for your company. We see companies getting bogged down in energy issues every day. Unfortunately, grid congestion won’t be solved in the next ten to twenty years.”

Founded in 2023 by Jorrit Salverda, Tom Selten, and Reinout de Jongh, Zympler offers a platform designed to intelligently connect and control various energy assets such as solar panels, batteries, and EV charging stations.

Its behind-the-meter technology allows companies to respond to growing energy demands while mitigating the effects of grid congestion, rising power costs, and infrastructure bottlenecks.

“The Zympler team is demonstrating true execution power and is technologically ahead of the market. Their behind-the-meter optimisation makes electrification possible for businesses struggling with grid congestion – a crucial piece of the puzzle in the energy transition,” said Lotte Smit van Ditshuizen, partner at Arches Capital.

Currently active at more than 20 sites across the Netherlands, including the TU/e campus and R. Nagel Transport, Zympler caters to the transport, logistics, energy, real estate, and installation sectors. The platform aims to enable businesses to automate charging when solar power is abundant, coordinate solar and storage strategies, and reduce imbalance costs for energy suppliers.

The funding will allow Zympler to expand its user base and continue building strategic partnerships with energy suppliers and installers. The broader goal is to ease the strain on the Dutch electricity grid while offering companies a path to cost savings and sustainable operations.

“Zympler combines technological innovation with direct social impact. Their predictive energy management system makes the electrification of processes, transportation, and real estate feasible and profitable – exactly what we need to accelerate the energy transition,” said Arjan van den Born, Director of ROM Utrecht Region.

The startup’s offering is essentially a “digital Chief Energy Officer” for its clients, putting powerful optimisation tools in the hands of companies overwhelmed by increasingly complex energy decisions.
