A new report by property co-ownership platform MYNE reveals that nearly two-in-five Brits spend time every day searching for a holiday home, despite fears of not being able to afford to buy or maintain one.
According to MYNE’s new report, titled ‘Rethinking the Dream: The future of holiday home ownership’, some 87% of those surveyed often think about their dream home once a day. And a vast majority – 88% – spend so much time thinking about it that it interferes with their job.
The UK is top of the table for holiday home seekers (53%), followed by international destinations – Spain (22%), Italy (15%), Greece (14%) and the USA (13%).
On average, those questioned spend four hours every week scrolling through properties at home and abroad. They most common sources are estate agents’ websites (two hours), TikTok (two hours), Instagram (one hour) and Facebook (one hour).
On top of this, nearly half (47%) say that whenever they go on holiday, they spend time looking in estate agents’ windows to see what properties they could afford.
While 92% of respondents are dreaming of owning a holiday home, 27% don’t think they’ll ever be able to own a holiday home in the UK or abroad, and only 10% consider holiday homeownership ‘easy’ due to fears of the bureaucracy involved and the bills they might face for things like upfront costs, maintenance and tax obligations.
According to the report, these are the top 10 on the wish list of holiday homes features:
- A sea view – 68%
- Good Wi-Fi – 53%
- A short stroll from the beach – 46%
- A friendly village nearby – 44%
- A swimming pool – 41%
- Air conditioning – 38%
- Comfortable beds/bathrooms – 37%
- Smart TV – 35%
- Good supermarket nearby – 34%
- A view of the mountains – 31%
