Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised a banking consortium on the financing of a modern mono sewage sludge incineration plant in the port of Hildesheim and an upstream sewage sludge drying plant for Kommunale Nährstoffrückgewinnung Niedersachsen GmbH (KNRN).
KNRN is backed by 21 municipal shareholders who have also concluded sewage sludge recycling agreements with KNRN as suppliers. With the construction of the plants, the shareholders are complying with the legal requirements for thermal recycling of sewage sludge and the recovery of phosphorus from 2029 and 2032 respectively. With the central incineration plant and the upstream drying of the sewage sludge, they will ensure an environmentally friendly recycling route and disposal in the region.
The concept of the sewage sludge incineration plant provides for intensive and highly efficient use of the energy released during thermal sewage sludge treatment. This generates electricity for the operation of the plant, with any surplus being fed into the power grid. In addition, the process engineering concept ensures that excess heat is extracted and used by connecting to the district heating network of the city of Hildesheim, reducing fossil-fuel-related CO2 emissions in Hildesheim..
White & Case has previously advised a consortium of banks on the initial financing of a sewage sludge incineration plant for KENOW GmbH & Co. KG in Bremen’s industrial port.
