A 500MW data center could be coming to Lapland in northern Finland.
As reported by local press, including Yle, FCDC Corp is developing a data center in Rovaniemi, a city in the north of Finland and the regional capital of Lapland.
The site, located 10km outside Rovaniemi, could total 180,000 sqm (1.93 million sq ft) – though few details are available. With construction set to start in 2027, the 500MW site could go live in 2029.
According to an announcement from the city of Rovaniemi, the target site is located at Hietavaara, along the eastern banks of the Kemijoki River, near the Valajaskoski power plant. The council recently agreed to acquire the land in question, ready to lease it to FCDC.
Jaakko Leinonen, FCDC’s director of land acquisition and development, told Yle the company has some eight projects around the county – including Mikkeli, Kerava, and Lahti.
Verne is set to take on FCDC’s Mäntsälä property; Verne announced plans for a 70MW project in the municipality late last year and confirmed to the Finnish state broadcaster it is working with FCDC. Construction is yet to begin, with Verne currently waiting on building permits.
FCDC has also acquired a plot of land in Lahti, a city 100km north of Helsinki and the regional capital of Päijät-Häme. The firm bought a 10-hectare plot from Spatium, the company managing the premises of the City of Lahti, for €6 million ($6.77m) last year, with plans to develop a 100MW facility.
FCDC was founded a year and a half ago as Fincap DC Corp. According to Yle, Finnish real estate investment firm Fincap owns around a quarter of FCDC, having sold its majority stake in the company.
