European data center operator NorthC has re-launched a data center it acquired in Winterthur, Switzerland.
Marking its fourth data center in Switzerland, the Winterthur facility has a capacity of 1.8MW across 1,100 sqm (11,840 sq ft) and offers potential for expansion in the future.
The company said its data center is interconnected with its facilities in Basel and Bern and runs on 100 percent renewable energy.
NorthC first acquired the facility from Kyndryl in 2023. At the time, Kyndyrl was expected to stay on as a customer of the facility.
“Regionality is very important to us – we offer regional data center services with an international reach,” said Patrik Hofer, managing director of NorthC Switzerland. “The demand for data centers, connectivity services, and hybrid cloud solutions is constantly increasing among companies from various industries. With our regional approach, we can offer customized solutions for businesses in the Winterthur region that meet the highest standards of quality, security, and sustainability.”
NorthC was formed in 2019 from the merger of Dutch data center firms TDCG and NLDC, originally a subsidiary of Dutch telecoms company KPN. In recent years, it has begun expanding to other European countries, buying Netrics in Switzerland and the IP Exchange in Germany.
Most recently, the company announced it would expand its German data center footprint with facilities in Frankfurt and Berlin, both set to launch in 2026. Its existing German data center footprint includes facilities in Munich and Nuremberg. Both are also due to undergo expansions this year, though further details have not been shared.
NorthC also operates 13 facilities in the Netherlands and plans to add 11MW of IT capacity to its Dutch data center portfolio. The company broke ground on its 4.5MW expansion project in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands, earlier this year.
Winterthur, located just north of Zurich, is currently home to around four data centers; all belonging to local colocation operators. Zurich is Switzerland’s most populated data center market, with the likes of Digital Realty, NTT, Stack, Vantage, AtlasEdge, and Equinix having a presence in the city.
