Avangrid, the US arm of Spanish utility Iberdrola, will construct six new power projects with a combined capacity of 800MW to help meet the soaring energy demand of data centers in the US.
The six projects are either in construction or are expected to commence construction in the coming months.
“With an extensive portfolio of energy projects spread across 24 states and a robust pipeline of over 25GW of projects, we are in the perfect position to provide secure American energy to the country’s largest technology companies and meet an expected surge in energy demand from data center growth,” said Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO.
Avangrid currently has eight projects that directly supply the data center sector, with a combined capacity of 1.25GW. The company has indicated that it is actively working on new projects to help meet the growing demand.
Avangrid has signed several renewable Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) with data center operators in the US.
In December, Avangrid and Portland General Electric signed a PPA with QTS and Meta to supply the tech firms with 120MW of solar power from an energy project under construction in Oregon. The Tower Solar project will supply energy directly to a planned Meta data center and is expected to reach commercial operations in 2026.
Before this, it signed a long-term PPA with Amazon to supply energy from its 98.4MW Leaning Juniper IIA wind farm in Oregon.
In total, Avangrid has more than 10.5GW of installed capacity across 24 states. Through its renewables business, Avangrid owns and operates more than 75 energy generation facilities across the US, producing over 9GW.
