As global threats evolve, the need for more adaptive and advanced defense solutions has never been more pressing. Traditional defense technologies remain indispensable, but there is an increasing recognition that innovative, agile startups can bring fresh perspectives and accelerate progress. Finland, with its legacy of defense excellence and its strategic role within NATO, is embracing the opportunity to foster new breakthroughs in both military and commercial sectors. By leveraging its strong defense infrastructure and technical expertise, Finland is creating an ecosystem where cutting-edge technologies can thrive alongside established industry giants.
A new program has emerged as a game-changer for defense and security innovation in Finland: the DEFINE Accelerator, short for Defence Innovation Network Finland, launched in Riihimäki, aims to fast-track technological growth in security and dual-use sectors. This program unites industry players, including the Finnish Defence Forces and major companies, to support startups at the frontier of defense technology. With Finland’s strategic position in Europe and strong technical expertise, DEFINE stands ready to shape the future of defense.
The Growing Need for Defense Innovation
The world of defense is rapidly evolving. As global security challenges shift, there’s a pressing need for agile, cutting-edge technologies that startups are uniquely positioned to provide. With Finland now a NATO member and holding the longest border with Russia among NATO countries, the Finnish defense industry has risen to the occasion, scaling its capacity for innovation. According to a Finnish state-owned investment company Tesi’s study, dual-use companies have enjoyed a 30% annual growth rate over the last three years. DEFINE, therefore, couldn’t come at a better time.
In collaboration with major defense institutions, the City of Riihimäki brings deep-rooted expertise and modern infrastructure to the program. The Finnish Defence Forces Research Agency, Millog, the Army Signal School, and Sako all call Riihimäki home, creating a vibrant environment for defense-focused innovation.
According to Teemu Seppälä, Director of Technology and Innovation at the City of Riihimäki, “Our mission is to help startups thrive by providing them with the right resources, mentoring, and connections to the partners to navigate the complexities of both the defence and commercial markets.”
Inside DEFINE Accelerator
DEFINE is a three-month, high-impact accelerator program offering startups access to world-class mentors, top-notch facilities, and a direct line to key industry players and investors. Managed by the renowned venture capital firm Redstone, the accelerator is designed to empower startups developing dual-use technologies, applicable to both defense and civilian markets.
Key program components include:
- Mentorship: From retired Lieutenant General Ilkka Korkiamäki, offering decades of defense insight, to head coaches Kaj Hagros and Oskari Lehtonen, whose expertise spans strategy, business scaling, and market growth, participants gain unparalleled guidance.
- Network Access: Startups work closely with leaders from the Finnish Defense Forces and notable companies like ICEYE and Varjo, giving them access to networks and resources vital for advancing their technologies.
- Investment Potential: For qualifying startups, DEFINE offers paths to investment, helping to scale businesses and integrate solutions into NATO and EU markets.
According to Toni Piispa, Vice President of Millog, “We understand the importance of bringing the defence industry closer to entrepreneurs and startups. DEFINE is a much welcomed initiative to help shape the future of defence technologies in Finland.”
With a longstanding commitment to defense and tech innovation, Riihimäki is uniquely positioned to support DEFINE. The region is renowned for its technical infrastructure, such as Häme University of Applied Sciences, which cultivates talent with a focus on automation, robotics, and mechanical engineering. Even local schools integrate robotics into their curriculum, fostering early interest in technology. Riihimäki’s existing tech ecosystem aligns seamlessly with the accelerator’s mission, making it an ideal hub for defense innovation.
Historically, military-driven technologies have profoundly impacted society—from GPS to touchscreen technology. DEFINE aims to continue this tradition by supporting dual-use startups whose innovations can serve both defense and commercial markets. With $976 million in defense startup deals in Europe in 2023, DEFINE taps into a booming sector where startups are playing an increasingly vital role in technological advancements.
DEFINE is now accepting applications for its first cohort, set to launch in late 2024. The program targets startups with a strong MVP or prototype, a scalable solution, and a driven team ready to enter the defense ecosystem. Successful applicants will gain mentorship, access to world-class facilities in Riihimäki, and connections to a network spanning NATO and EU countries.
Startups can apply by November 15th via the DEFINE website: DEFINE Accelerator – Defence Innovation Network Finland.
