Amazon has once again claimed the title of Europe’s largest corporate buyer of renewables, according to research from BloombergNEF.
According to the company, it now has more than 10GW of renewable energy capacity contracted within Europe, out of more than 40GW worldwide. In February, Bloomberg reported that Amazon, alongside Meta, was the largest buyer of renewable energy worldwide over the last year, contracting a combined 20.4GW, including 4.7GW of nuclear power.
Its procurement strategy was heavily diversified, with the company contracting approximately 4GW of solar, 2GW of wind, and almost 4GW of nuclear power. Amazon’s clean energy portfolio now spans more than 700 projects across 28 countries, including four nuclear power agreements, 11 utility-scale battery storage projects, more than 300 utility-scale solar and wind farms, 300 onsite solar projects, and six offshore wind farms in Europe.
Within the European market, the company signed a range of PPA’s and clean energy agreements. The most eye-catching of which was a 110MW PPA with RWE for power from the 900MW German Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm in the North Sea.
Other notable deals in Europe included a 28MW PPA in Poland, three PPAs with Iberdrola totaling 476MW across Spain and Portugal, and a 47.3MW PPA with the ERG Group in Northern Ireland.
Last year, the company said that the latest wave of European projects is centered in countries with high carbon intensity, such as Poland and Germany, as well as in markets where it has significant data center operations, including Ireland, Spain, and the UK.
The additions are part of Amazon’s broader commitment to power its global operations with 100 percent renewable energy as it works toward its 2040 net-zero target.
