Data management and storage company Spectra Logic has teamed up with cold data archive service provider Geyser Data to establish a tape archive location in London, UK.
From the site, the two will offer Tape Archive Platform-as-a-Service (TAPAS) via the Geyser Data portal to customers, marking the first European deployment for the companies.
The deployment will be housed within a Digital Realty facility. Digital Realty operates 13 data centers in and around London; however, the specific data center has not been named.
The two aim to target companies that have been seeking to move cold data to the cloud but find that it can come with unexpected costs associated with egress fees and data retrieval. Instead, the tape-powered archive Infrastructure-as-a-Service provides a cloud-based archive copy with predictable pricing.
Spectra Logic provides the tape library infrastructure and archive technologies, while Geyser Data handles the software and cloud platform, which gives customers access to archive storage through an Amazon S3-compatible interface.
The TAPAS is based on Spectra Logic’s Spectra Cube, a cloud-optimized tape library, in addition to the company’s Spectra Certified LTO-9 media and Spectra BlackPearl solutions.
“London is an important milestone because it demonstrates that Tape-as-a-Service can scale into new markets through a growing provider ecosystem,” said Nelson Nahum, CEO of Geyser Data. “Organizations are looking for archive infrastructure that is purpose-built for long-term cold data retention with predictable economics. At the same time, service providers want a practical way to deliver those capabilities locally. Expanding to London gives customers more geographic choice and validates that this model works.”
“As demand for long-term data retention continues to grow, providers are looking for reliable infrastructure that can support archive services in their regions,” added Nathan Thompson, CEO of Spectra Logic. “Our tape library platforms and S3-compatible archive technologies power the underlying infrastructure that makes these deployments possible and give providers a proven foundation for delivering scalable cold data archiving.”
Currently, the Geyser Data portal offers access to a Los Angeles, US-based deployment, having launched in November 2024. That deployment is also in partnership with Spectra Logic, with the two first sharing plans to beta test the offering in May 2024. Another location in Brazil is also expected to come online later this year.
In 2025, Spectra Logic announced support for LTO-10 tape technology across its portfolio of tape libraries, including Spectra TFinity, TFinity ExaScale, TFinity Plus, T950, T950V, T680, T380, T200, Spectra Cube, and Spectra Stack models. The company also launched a new OSW-2400 Optical SAS Switch to support data center tape storage connectivity at the start of that year.
