A data center colocated with a solar farm and battery storage system is being planned in West Finland.
In other news from Finland, Greensky is targeting a development in Huittinen, and FCDC has broken ground in Vaasa.
Valorem eyes Eurajoki
Yle and Satakunnan Kansa report that French energy firm Valorem is looking to develop a 60MW data center, 80MW solar plant, and 30MW battery energy storage system (BESS) on 55 hectares in the Kissankallio area of Eurajoki.
Eurajoki is a municipality in the Satakunta region in the province of Western Finland.
The company is negotiating with the municipality for a planning reservation of approximately 55 hectares of land and is about to begin the zoning and permitting process.
“The intention is that the center could be expanded to several hundred megawatts if necessary. In any case, it would be a significant investment even in the initial phase,” said Minna Jukola, country director of Valorem Energies Finland.
“The project is a significant opening for Eurajoki from the perspective of the municipality’s economic development and energy-efficient investments,” added Mayor Vesa Lakaniemi.
Valorem has some 1.5GW of energy projects in development or operation around Finland across wind, solar, and hydroelectric sites. It completed and sold the 313MW Viiatti wind farm project in 2024. Founded in 1994, the firm has more than 8.5GW of projects under development or operation across Europe.
Greensky targets Huittinen
Most of Finland’s data centers are located in the country’s capital, Helsinki. But Finland’s environment, abundant land, and cheap green energy have attracted increasing numbers of data center developers, with the Finnish Data Center Association estimating that live capacity in the country will increase from 285MW in 2025 to 1.5GW in 2030.
Established operators, including the likes of Verne, Equinix, and atNorth, have a presence in Finland, while new entrants such as Polarnode, FCDC, Arcem, and Hyperco are planning multiple developments across the country. International operators, including QTS, Prime, Pure, and DayOne, are also looking to develop in Finland.
Finnish company Greensky Energy is also developing a facility in the Satakunta region.
The town of Huittinen last week announced the company is planning to develop a 250MW campus in Hankaanmaa, Korvenkylä. The first phase would offer 100MW.
“The data center project would strengthen the vitality of Huittinen by bringing significant investments, new jobs, and tax revenue that would stabilize the municipality’s economy, thus improving the services in the area,” said Riikka Peippo, Huittinen’s director of vitality.
The project is still in the planning phase.
Greensky Energy is a Finnish green transition accelerator founded in 2023, focused on renewable energy projects. The firm says it acts as a development partner for Finland’s largest landowners and works with international energy investors. The company has previously partnered with energy storage developer AmpTank for a planned data center project in Utajärvi.
Fortum looks to develop site in Pennala with partner
Finnish energy firm Fortum is also looking to develop a data center, this time in Pennala.
Pennala is a village in the northern part of the Orimattila municipality in Päijät-Häme, some 100km (62.14 miles) north of the capital, Helsinki.
The company is developing a 150-hectare site in Länsi-Pennala, Orimattila. According to its site development page, the energy firm is developing the area for potential data center operators who will make the actual investments. Permitting work is ongoing with the city council.
According to a LinkedIn post by Fortum senior manager Lauri Pihlajamäki, the site could host 638,290 sqm (6.9 million sq ft) of development, with a site plan suggesting up to nine buildings.
Fortum has similar development opportunities in Rauma, Klaukkala, Harjavalta, and Jyväskylä.
FCDC breaks ground in Vaasa
Yle last week reported that construction work on FCDC’s 66,000 sqm (710,418 sq ft) project in the Lajametsä industrial area of Vaasa has begun. The data center could launch in 2028.
The project was first announced in December. Vaasa, formerly known as Nikolaistad, is a city in Finland and the regional capital of Ostrobothnia. It is located on the west coast of the country, on the Gulf of Bothnia.
FCDC was founded in 2024 as Fincap DC Corp., though Finnish real estate investment firm Fincap only holds a minority stake in the business.
The company is also developing sites in Rovaniemi, a city in the north of Finland and the regional capital of Lapland. Verne is set to lease the site. FCDC is also eyeing a site in Lahti, a city 100km (62.1 miles) north of Helsinki and the regional capital of Päijät-Häme.
