Airtel Africa and SpaceX have partnered to test data and messaging services with Starlink Mobile in Kenya.
According to Airtel Africa, the African-focused subsidiary of Indian telco giant Bharti Airtel, the tests were successful and are a significant step towards bringing satellite-to-mobile connectivity to millions of customers across Airtel Africa’s 14 markets.
It builds on an agreement signed between Airtel and SpaceX, Starlink’s parent company, in December. At the time, Airtel noted that the service will begin with data for select applications and text messaging.
The agreement also includes support for Starlink’s first broadband Direct-to-Cell system, with next-generation satellites that the carrier claims will be able to provide 20x improved data speed.
Airtel said this week that testing was carried out in “no connectivity” areas – locations where terrestrial mobile networks did not have a signal.
The carrier explained that in these areas, Starlink Mobile was seamlessly activated, enabling 4G-compatible smartphones to access Starlink’s constellation, which is made up of more than 650 LEO satellites.
During this trial, connectivity supported applications such as WhatsApp calling and messaging, maps, Facebook Messenger, and successful financial transactions via the Airtel app.
“This testing phase in Kenya is a testament to our commitment to expanding global access. By integrating Starlink Mobile’s technology, we are ensuring that our customers remain connected even when they travel beyond our terrestrial network,” said Sunil Taldar, chief executive officer, Airtel Africa.
