Legora, a collaborative AI platform for lawyers, has acquired Canadian legal tech startup Walter as it looks to expand the development of so-called agentic AI systems for legal workflows. Legora provides AI tools that integrate with law firms’ existing systems to assist with tasks such as research, drafting and document review, while Walter AI has focused on building autonomous software agents capable of executing multi-step legal processes across tools like Outlook and document management systems. The acquisition also gives Legora access to Walter’s relationships with major Canadian firms, including Fasken Martineau and McCarthy Tétrault, where the technology has been developed in collaboration with legal teams. The integration will combine their technologies into a single platform designed to automate larger portions of legal work, while also supporting Legora’s expansion into the Canadian market.

Legora is a legal technology company that develops AI software designed to assist lawyers with tasks such as legal research, document drafting, and workflow management within existing law firm systems. The platform integrates with tools commonly used by legal teams, including email and document management systems, and aims to streamline routine legal work through automation and machine learning.

Walter is a legal AI startup that builds agent-based software designed to carry out multi-step legal workflows across different systems used by law firms. Its technology focuses on enabling autonomous software agents to perform tasks such as document analysis, editing, and coordination across tools like email and document management platforms. The company has worked with several Canadian law firms to develop and test its products in real-world legal environments.

“When we saw what the Walter team had built, we immediately recognized a shared philosophy around agent-native design,” said Max Junestrand, CEO and co-founder of Legora. “The Walter team have approached legal AI the same way we have – embedding closely with lawyers and designing agents to handle real, end-to-end workflows. Bringing our teams together allows us to scale that vision faster.”

The acquisition expands Legora’s vision for a fully agentic experience for lawyers. One where a single AI agent executes complex, multi-step legal workflows end-to-end — from first-mile Outlook intake, through DMS research, multi-document editing, and blacklining, to last-mile client replies.

Paired with Walter’s established relationships at major Canadian law firms with offices across the country, the acquisition positions Legora to expand its presence in the Canadian market while accelerating its broader vision for agentic legal AI globally.

Walter’s product development process was shaped through a joint innovation program with Fasken and McCarthy Tétrault. By embedding forward-deployed engineers directly with partners and associates, Walter was able to rapidly iterate on a new model for legal work—one where AI agents execute work alongside lawyers, rather than simply assist them. The outcome is an agentic platform capable of executing complex multi-step legal workflows, delivering industry-leading document editing and truly agentic integrations with core firm systems such as iManage and Outlook.

Leading the Walter team are Ryan Wilson, CEO, a multi-exited founder who has built and sold five companies across payments, healthcare, cybersecurity, and vertical SaaS, and Greg Bell, Principal Engineer, who brings deep infrastructure expertise as a former General Manager of Amazon S3.

“When we met the Legora team, it was clear we had a shared vision for the future of agentic legal technology. By joining Legora we can accelerate the realization of that shared vision of end-to-end matter management with fleets of agents.” said Wilson. “We’ve built both companies in close partnership with the legal teams actually doing the work. Working with our customers, not just for them – iterating on feedback until the product matches how legal work actually gets done. And we’ve both arrived at the same conclusion: the future of legal AI is agentic.”
