GAL1: The first major data center in Northwest Spain, fully licensed and strategically positioned Madrid
Nostrum Group, through its subsidiary Nostrum Data Centers, has reaffirmed its operational solidity in the critical infrastructure sector after reaching decisive milestones in its two main projects in Spain: BAZ-01 in Badajoz and GUA1 in Guadalajara. With a portfolio exceeding 500MWe secured with permits and grid connections, the company positions itself as one of the most advanced players in the market.
BAZ-01 (Badajoz), scalability up to 1GW
The BAZ-01 project has reached a turning point with the filing of the Major Works Permit Application for its Phase 1 (170MWe). This campus stands out for its ambitious scaling capacity and legal certainty:
- Guaranteed power and land: The project has secured land and 300MWe guaranteed, which do not depend on future electrical planning. The infrastructure has been designed for a total capacity of 500MWe, scalable up to 1GW.
- Construction milestones: It is expected to reach ready-to-build (RtB) status in September 2026. The start of construction is projected for that same year, 2026.
- Time to market: The BAZ-01 data center is expected to enter the market in the fourth quarter of 2027.
- Technical partner: AECOM leads the technical engineering, ensuring robustness and compatibility with high-density AI architectures.
GUA1 (Guadalajara), a strategic connectivity node
Nostrum Data Centers is moving firmly ahead with the Guadalajara DC (GUA1) project, a state-of-the-art facility located in the El Ruiseñor Industrial Park.
- Guaranteed power and land: The company has acquired two hectares of industrial land and has 40 MWe of power already granted and guaranteed for this development.
- Construction milestones: The start of construction is planned for late 2026.
- Time to market: It is estimated that GUA1 will enter into operation during 2028.
- Efficiency: Designed by the engineering firm IDOM, the center will operate with a PUE of 1.1 and zero water consumption for cooling.
GAL1 (Galicia), the first major data center in Northwest Spain
Nostrum Data Centers is advancing steadily with the Galicia Green Data Center (GAL1) project, a cutting-edge facility located in a prime industrial area in Galicia.
• Licensed and approved: GAL1 is a project of strategic interest and has already received its construction license granted by the Xunta de Galicia, ensuring regulatory compliance and streamlined development.
• Guaranteed power and land: Nostrum has secured four hectares of industrial land and 25MWe of power already granted and guaranteed for this development.
• Construction milestones: Construction is scheduled to begin in Q2 2026
• Time to market: GAL1 is expected to be operational by Q3 2027
• Efficiency: Designed by the engineering firm PGI, the data center will operate with a PUE of 1.1 and zero water consumption for cooling.
Commercial progress and strategic vision
The maturity of these assets is reflected not only at the administrative level but also commercially. Conversations with future clients and large offtakers are currently advancing with firm and decided steps, aligning with the sector’s most ambitious delivery schedules.
Under the leadership of Gabriel Nebreda, Nostrum Group seeks to mimic the agility of large US campuses in Europe. “The filing of these milestones is a clear signal of our execution capability. We are advancing large-scale assets in record time to respond to the demand of the next technological wave,” noted Nebreda.
In collaboration with JLL leading global data center advisory platform
“We are delighted to collaborate with Nostrum Data Centers, contributing our expertise and guidance to support their goal of becoming a leading data center platform in Spain,” said Jason Bell, senior vice president of data centers for North America.
The partnership, he noted, will feature teams in North America and EMEA working closely together, leveraging JLL’s global experience in providing data center advisory and leasing services and helping to optimize market positioning for properties in this high-demand sector.
Madeleine Carey, head of occupier representation EMEA data centers, said: “Spain has emerged as one of Europe’s most compelling destinations for large-scale data center deployment. This opportunity responds directly to surging demand from hyperscale, enterprise and Neocloud occupiers seeking immediate access to substantial power, best-in-class connectivity and a platform built for long-term growth and scale.
JLL and Nostrum Data Centers will be present at the Nvidia GTC AI Conference, taking place from March 16-19, inviting attendees to meet and explore one of the most mature data center portfolios in Europe.
