Dragonfly-inspired DeepTech: Austria’s fibionic secures €3 million for its nature-inspired lightweight technology

fibionic, an Austrian DeepTech startup specialising in bionically optimised fibre placement, today announced the closing of its €3 million Seed financing round, to further industrialise its nature-inspired technology for precise fibre placement and enter new markets.

The round was led by Redstone and Euregio+, together with co-lead investors Caesar and Leap435, as well as various angel investors.

“With fibionic, we are taking high-performance lightweight engineering to the next level. We enable the fast, sustainable and cost-efficient production of extremely high-performing, ultra-light products,” said Elias Hirschbichler, co-founder of fibionic.

Fibionic was founded in 2021 by Thomas Rettenwander and Johannes Mandler. Hirschbichler joined the company as a co-founder later in 2024. The lightweight engineering company has a patented process for bionically inspired fibre placement. The company claims to have developed the world’s fastest and most efficient technology for manufacturing lightweight components, using its patented, sustainable approach called “fibionic fibre placement” (FFP).

According to the company, lightweight materials are considered a key technology for many industries, including sports equipment, UAVs, robotics, industrial sectors, mobility, and more. However, manufacturing processes, material usage, and automation often remain inefficient.

fibionic claims to address this problem precisely with FPP. The company uses bionic principles to align fibres specifically along actual load paths, inspired by structures found in nature, such as the wings of a dragonfly.

It highlights that FFP is the world’s fastest, most efficient and most sustainable fibre placement technology, achieving cycle times of up to one minute per component. As a result, fibre composite components are produced significantly lighter, more stable, and more sustainable.

With FFP, fibionic claims to introduce a fundamentally new standard in process optimisation for composite manufacturing.

The company has partnered with Italian heritage brand Selle Italia, a leading manufacturer of bicycle saddles, and is producing products in large-scale series using the unique FFP process to optimise weight, stability, and material efficiency. Fibionic claims to sustainably save up to 60% of material and reduce product weight by up to 50%.

With this fresh funding, the company plans to expand its industrial processes and further develop its proprietary technology platform. The company also intends to build a high-impact team in engineering and business development.

fibionic’s aim is to transfer pilot applications into production-ready series and scale its ecosystem, covering the entire process from simulation and equipment technology to materials sales and a dedicated licensing model. This approach includes the development of connected standalone software packages, from fibre trajectory optimisations to an automated tool construction and operating software.
