A 2MW data center is being developed in the Finnish city of Saarijarvi, where it will be integrated into the city’s district heating.

French data center developer and energy operator Eddu Energy will provide an approximately 400 sqm (4,305 sq ft) containerized data center, situated next to a heating plant operated by Saarijarven Kaukolampo Oy, a local utility company.

Eddu says that the facility is designed to deliver heat at temperatures of up to 80°C(176°F), adding that it is “dimensioned to replace approximately one third of the annual heat production currently generated from biomass within [the utility’s] network.”

According to Eddu, the district heating infrastructure works have already been completed, and the project is in its operational development phase.

But the company said that it could not disclose the exact commissioning date for “industrial confidentiality reasons.”

Eddu also told DCD that the project was “part of a broader strategy to deploy similar heat-integrated solutions across Finland and the Nordic region, where a significant portfolio of projects is currently under development.”

The company’s website states that its data centers are scalable from 500kW to 2MW per unit and are deployable at various industrial facilities.

Eddu is aiming to secure more than 100MW of data center projects in the Nordic and Baltic region by 2028, and it aims to position the region as a “reliable and scalable hub for mining, with future expansion into HPC and AI,” according to a slide deck issued by the company in September 2025.

Most of Finland’s data centers are located in the country’s capital, Helsinki. But the country’s climate, size, and cheap green energy led the Finnish Data Center Association to estimate that live capacity in the country would increase from 285MW in 2025 to 1.5GW in 2030.
