Digital Realty has entered Portugal, acquiring a data center in Lisbon.
Announced this week, the facility is expected to support up to 2.4MW of IT load.
Details on the facility, the seller, and terms of the deal weren’t shared in the release. However, in its recent Q4 2025 results, the company said it had acquired “a building and land” in the Carnaxide area of Lisbon for $8.3 million.
The acquired facility is expected to be ready for service in early 2027. Digital Realty said the site will be the closest data center to the submarine cable landings in Carcavelos.
“Adding Portugal to our portfolio represents a key piece of our Iberian strategy,” said Paula Cogan, managing director EMEA, Digital Realty.
“With its unique subsea connectivity and position as Europe’s Atlantic gateway, Lisbon adds meaningful diversity and resilience to regional data flows, while simultaneously complementing our existing presence in Madrid and Barcelona. This expansion strengthens interconnection across our platform and gives customers unparalleled choice and agility as they scale their businesses globally.”
The company added that it is “laying the groundwork for long-term scalability,” with future expansion and campus development plans, but didn’t provide more details.
Portugal has a modest data center market. Operators around Lisbon include Equinix, Templus, Edged, and AtlasEdge, as well as local operators. Start Campus is developing a large site south of the city in Sines that is set to be partly leased to Microsoft and Nscale.
