Google has signed two Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) with French power company TotalEnergies for more than 1GW of solar capacity across Texas.
The 15-year deals are expected to deliver 28TWh of power to the hyperscaler over the duration of the contracts. The power will be derived from the 805MW Wichita solar farm in western Wichita County, northern Texas, and the 195MW Mustang Creek solar farm in Johnson County. Both projects are under development and are expected to reach commercial operations in Q2 of this year.
“Supporting a strong, stable, affordable grid is a top priority as we expand our infrastructure,” said Will Conkling, director of Clean Energy and Power at Google. “Our agreement with TotalEnergies adds necessary new generation to the local system, boosting the amount of affordable and reliable power supply available to serve the entire region.”
The deals come hot on the heels of a series of PPAs signed with Clearway Energy Group, of which Total has a 50 percent stake. The PPAs are tied to projects across Missouri, Texas, and West Virginia, totaling 1.17GW of solar power.
“We are pleased to sign these agreements to supply renewable electricity to Google in Texas, representing the largest renewable PPA volume ever signed by TotalEnergies in the United States”, said Marc-Antoine Pignon, VP of Renewables US at TotalEnergies.
“This highlights TotalEnergies’ strategy to deliver tailored renewable energy solutions that support the decarbonization goals of digital players, particularly data centers. Through this PPA, TotalEnergies is also addressing the challenges of land availability and power supply for data centers by enabling large-scale colocation opportunities.”
The two companies also signed a long-term PPA in November for up to 1.5TWh of power from the 49MW Montpelier solar farm, located in Williams County, Ohio.
Google has been steadily increasing its Texas footprint over recent years. In November, the search giant announced plans to invest up to $40 billion in expanding its cloud and AI infrastructure in the state through 2027. Google first built a data center in the Midlothian area of Dallas in 2019, and has since expanded the campus several times, including filing plans to develop a fourth building at the site in 2024.
The company has signed several PPAs to support its operations in Texas, including deals with X-Elio and Engie, both signed in 2024.
Total has targeted the US market as a key growth area over recent years, committing to deploy a 10GW portfolio in the country, with 1GW in the PJM market.
The company has already signed several PPAs with data center and telco firms. Late last year, the company signed a ten-year 30MW renewable energy supply contract with European data center firm Data4. The company has also signed PPAs with STMicroelectronics, Amazon, Microsoft, BT, and Orange in the past few years.
