Google has received permitting approval to develop a data center in Kronstorf, Austria.
As reported by Kronen Zeitung, the cloud and search giant has finally been given the green light for its planned 42,000 sqm (452,000 sq ft) development.
Though the project has received a building permit and a commercial permit, these are not yet legally binding as an objection period is ongoing.
But it is anticipated that construction will be able to begin in the near future, and the site will be the company’s first self-built and owned data center in Austria.
The data center project has been in the works to some degree for more than 17 years. google purchase the land around 70 hectares at a site in Kronstorf, close to hydroelectric power stations on the river Enns, back in 2008. At the time, reports suggested the firm was expected to invest around €200 million ($239m) in the site over the following two years.
Since then, Google has sold 20 hectares back to the regional Inkoba Association (Intercommunal Business Settlement, ed.) Kronstorf-Hargelsberg and the Upper Austrian location agency Business Upper Austria, due to construction delays.
Now, the company is saying that it is not yet sure how much it will invest in the site, but it has given guidance on the size of the facility. While it will have a total floor space of 42,000 sqm, 29,000 sqm (312,153 sq ft) will be used as data center space. Groundwork has been ongoing since at least August 2025.
Google announced plans for an Austrian cloud region in 2022, though it did not offer a timeline. already has a sizeable data center presence across Europe, including many of Austria’s nearest neighbors. The company has cloud regions in Frankfurt (including a self-built site in Hanau) and Berlin, Germany, plus Zurich, Switzerland, and Milan, Italy.
Microsoft launched a cloud region in Austria in July 2025.
