NextEra Energy has signed 2.5GW of clean energy contracts with Meta across the US. The 2.5GW comprises 11 Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) and two Energy Storage Agreements (ESA).
In the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Southwest Power Pool, and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator markets, Meta signed nine solar PPAs totalling 2.1GW of power. The deals were signed with NextEra Energy Resources, a NextEra subsidiary. The exact location and capacity of the projects were not disclosed.
In New Mexico, the company signed two PPAs and two ESAs, in Valencia and De Baca counties, for 190MW of solar power and 168MW of battery energy storage. The deals aim to support the Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) system through PNM’s Rate 36B, which permits Meta and other customers to contract for and support clean energy projects on PNM’s system more efficiently and match consumption with renewable energy.
“We are proud to continue our collaboration with NextEra Energy Resources in advancing energy infrastructure and storage solutions. The integration of 2.1GW across ERCOT, SPP, and MISO, along with more than 350MW from the three-way collaboration with PNM in New Mexico, to support our data center operations, demonstrates how industry cooperation can drive technological progress and strengthen America’s energy infrastructure,” said Urvi Parekh, head of energy at Meta.
The projects are expected to come online between 2026 and 2028, creating up to 2,440 construction jobs
“We are incredibly excited to grow our collaboration with Meta, one of America’s iconic companies. These agreements demonstrate our continued commitment to bring energy solutions to help grow the American economy, drive innovation, and ensure the US wins the AI race,” Brian Bolster, president and CEO of NextEra Energy Resources, said.
The agreements build on up to 500MW of projects owned and operated by NextEra that Meta has committed to offtake power from.
NextEra has also signed several PPAs with Google. Last September, the firm signed a deal to offtake power from the Pierce County Energy Center, a 420MW solar system and a 680MWh battery energy storage system in northeast Nebraska that is expected to come online in 2027.
Following this, last month, the companies signed a 25-year PPA to support the restart of the 615MW Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo, Iowa.
