Meta could open a data center in Finland.
Facebook’s parent company is working with the municipality of Li, located in the western region of Northern Ostrobothnia on a 1,160-hectare site 25km north of Li city center.
According to local reports, 475 hectares of the land has been earmarked for data center use, though a final investment decision about the site has yet to be made.
It is not clear who currently owns the property, but Meta is pursuing the project through a subsidiary, Valoa Networks.
Li’s Mayor Marjukka Manninen said the city “produces a significant amount of clean energy” which is attractive to data center operators like Meta.
“The planning process that is now starting is an example of how the municipality can, through its own work, enable future investments. It shows our region’s readiness to be part of global supply chains,” said Manninen.
The local authority said it is working with Meta on zoning, environmental impact assessments, and other parts of the permitting process. Zoning is not expected to be completed until 2027, but the site has been included in two draft local planning frameworks.
Meta does not currently have a data center in Finland, but operates three facilities in neighboring Sweden.
Most of Finland’s data centers are located in the country’s capital, Helsinki. Established operators, including the likes of Verne, Equinix, and atNorth, have a presence in Finland, while new operators such as Polarnode, FCDC, Arcem, and Hyperco are planning multiple developments across the country. International operators, including QTS, Pure, and DayOne, are also looking to develop in Finland.
Last week, ASP DC announced it was planning a 300MW campus near the city of Pori.
