Microsoft’s head of AI infrastructure has joined neocloud Nscale.
Nidhi Chappell has been named president of AI infrastructure at the company, which has multiple multi-billion dollar contracts with Microsoft.
Chappell, who announced her departure from Microsoft last week, was instrumental to building the infrastructure behind Microsoft’s OpenAI contract.
“What started as an ambitious idea grew into the world’s largest AI GPU fleet—supporting Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and some of the most exciting innovation happening anywhere in technology,” she said at the time.
This October, Nscale announced a $14 billion deal with Microsoft, where it pledged to support 104,000 GB300 GPUs at its data center in Texas. The 240MW facility, leased from cryptominer Ionic Digital, could grow to 1.2GW.
Nscale also plans to deliver up to 12,600 GB300s at the Start Campus data center in Sines, Portugal, for use by Microsoft. In Norway, it has a $6.2bn deal to provide compute for the hyperscaler, alongside plans to build the largest AI supercomputer in the UK.
Outside of Microsoft, Nscale is working with OpenAI for two Stargate projects – a 100,000-GPU Norway project and a smaller UK deployment.
Overall, the company plans to deploy 300,000 Nvidia GPUs globally.
