US broadband provider Cable One has launched its mobile service, Sparklight Mobile, as the company seeks to expand its offering beyond home Internet services.

Sparklight initially launched this week with three different plans, including a 1 GB data package for $15 per month, a 5 GB data package for $25 per month, or an unlimited data plan for $30 per month.

As this is company’s first foray into offering a mobile service, Sparklight will operate as an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator).

An MVNO doesn’t own or operate its own network, but instead uses the network infrastructure of an existing mobile carrier.

Cable One previously rebranded its residential services division as Sparklight, as part of plans to promote its Internet services more than cable TV offerings. The new unit retains the Sparklight brand.

Sparklight didn’t specify its network partners, though Light Reading reports that the company paired with mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE) Reach in the summer to conduct a pilot, while using AT&T’s network for market trials.

“In today’s world, staying connected at home and on the go is essential,” said Tony Mokry, senior vice president of residential services at Sparklight. “Sparklight Mobile gives customers a dependable mobile option that delivers the flexibility, reliability, and value they expect from a provider they already know and trust.”

At present, Cable One serves more than one million broadband customers across 24 states.

Its history dates back to 1986 when it was founded as a subsidiary of Graham Holdings Company. It was initially known as Post-Newsweek Cable, before changing its name to Cable One in 1997.

The company is the latest broadband provider to launch mobile services, following the path of other players, including Comcast, Charter Communications, and Cox Communications.

DCD covers the emergence of new entrants into the MVNO market in the next issue of DCD>Magazine.
